The "WE WIN Club" was established in October 2022, led by 4J, a small leader passionate about debating and a multiple-time winner of national and international debate competitions. The club has been engaged in continuous training since its inception and began introducing professional Canadian instructors for speech and writing courses in the summer of 2023. Since its formation, the club has been committed to practicing and fostering qualities in its team members such as confidence, self-motivation, perseverance, trust, and responsibility - traits essential for future leaders. The club adheres to the principle of sticking together through thick and thin, advancing hand in hand, and always upholding the "WE WIN" team goal, rather than just "I WIN."
本课程根据学员语言基础,开设Speech & Reading(适合英语能力A1/2)及Speech & Writing(适合英语能力B1/2)两个不同Level的分班学习。
The club's debate team is a mixed group of debaters from the US, Canada, and domestic circles. Team members have the opportunity to practice with outstanding debaters of the same age from different countries, which is beneficial for understanding and integrating diverse cultural backgrounds, learning habits, and styles. There is also the chance to form international teams to complement each other's strengths and win competitions. The regular group learning content includes:
a) Regular Training: Team members with basic debating knowledge are divided into two debate teams, Comp1 & 2, based on age, experience, and achievements. Regular and continuous training sessions are arranged weekly in BP/WSDC formats, guiding team members to delve into hot topics in international politics, social issues, humanities, and more. While building knowledge structures, the training also continuously strengthens debate skills and fosters team collaboration.
b) Pre-Competition Intensive Training: For major domestic and international competition seasons, debate team members are organized for focused preparation on PF and WSDC topics. In the winter of 2024, we will focus on preparing for the PF and WSDC topics of the annual Harvard and Stanford championships.
c) General Education Support: Current Event and Social Studies. How to quickly understand and counter complex impromptu debate topics? How to maintain one's independent personality in a complex world? Current Event mainly involves guided reading of 'The Economist' magazine, covering hot topics in economics, politics, technology, and society. Through multi-perspective interpretation and group discussions, it helps team members understand current world events. Social Studies covers history, humanities, sociology, etc., guiding team members to understand the breadth and diversity of human society through important historical events, as well as the connections and interactions between different cultures and regions. This encourages us to further explore and understand the world we live in. As team members continuously expand their knowledge, they can form their unique views of the world, not swayed by public opinion.
d) Essay Writing Training: Excellent debaters cannot do without a solid foundation in writing, and writing ability is the cornerstone of humanities standardized test scores. WE WIN collaborates with certified professional teachers from Canada, developing a writing course with unique features for the debate club, based on the Great Writing textbooks, volumes 4 and 5, known as the go-to writing material for top students. The course involves numerous methods for analyzing and organizing information, helping students connect with brainstorming to inspire writing ideas and make their essays more logical.
e) 1-on-1 Writing Tutoring: Merely learning (attending classes) without practicing (writing) cannot solve the problem of improving writing skills. It requires applying the content learned in class (starting to write), followed by feedback from excellent teachers and continuous revisions by students. Implementing 1-on-1 writing tutoring during the professional teacher's Office Hour is time-consuming and labor-intensive for both operations and tutors, but it is also the most effective and targeted guidance. This ensures systematic and continuous writing training, feedback, and revision, achieving maximum progress in writing skills.
2. Comprehensive Introduction to Debate for Beginners:
Every winter and summer vacation, WE WIN organizes free public introductory debate classes conducted by outstanding team members. These classes aim to cultivate interest, allowing more children to fall in love with and benefit from learning debate, and also provide a platform for talented team members to showcase their abilities.
Additionally, for new members with a long-term interest in learning, we offer a comprehensive introductory course in debate. This course is led by international debate champions who serve as team leaders, imparting core foundational knowledge in debate. This includes understanding different debate formats, constructing arguments, refutation, and analysis. Special emphasis is given to teaching the BP British Parliamentary debate style, while also covering other debate formats. Through this learning process, team members will gain a clear understanding of what debate is, how to prepare arguments, how to refute points, and how to reconstruct arguments, equipping them with the basic skills needed to step into the world of debating.
3. Speech and Writing Courses Suitable for Lower Grades (or Students Not Yet Proficient in English):
Debate requires a certain age-related cognitive ability and language foundation. For younger students or those not yet proficient in English, it is necessary to establish a system for continuous improvement to build up their capabilities. WE WIN has developed small-group speech and writing courses based on the prestigious 'National Geographic' Reading Explorer series. These courses are led by a retired international school principal with half a lifetime of international education experience. His extensive teaching experience, ability to guide and interact with younger students or those not yet proficient in English, combined with a systematic curriculum that focuses on topics of interest to children, lays a solid foundation in language and knowledge for future debate studies. Depending on the language proficiency of the students, the courses are divided into two different levels: Speech & Reading (suitable for students with English proficiency levels A1/2) and Speech & Writing (suitable for students with English proficiency levels B1/2).
4. Excelling in Both Arts and Sciences:
At WE WIN Club, the training in critical thinking not only enhances our members' abilities in scientific studies but also fosters a group of outstanding individuals who excel in both arts and sciences. Actively participating in debate competitions, these members also achieve remarkable results in scientific contests like AMC, Gauss, Kangaroo, and robotics. Consequently, a study group for AMC 8-10 was formed in the fall of 2023, establishing a regular team learning mechanism. We aim to inspire more team members to excel in both arts and sciences, striving to become even more accomplished and well-rounded individuals!
In the year since the club was established, five new team members have already won their first debate championship medals, with countless others achieving runner-up, top four, top eight, and outstanding debater accolades. The 2024 winter vacation membership recruitment is now underway. No matter what stage you are at in your debate learning journey, you are welcome to join us and become a part of an excellent team where you can benefit and grow together for a lifetime!
